Co-Presidents' Message

As we hurry to get ready for the Annual Luncheon, Voter Guides distributions, voter registrations and candidate forums, let us pause and reflect on recent losses to our national and local leagues.

Our national president, Dr. Deborah Turner MD died unexpectedly on January 28. Virginia Kase Solomón, CEO LWV US wrote of Dr. Turner, “We are committed to honoring her legacy by continuing to uphold our values to empower voters and build a stronger, more inclusive democracy.”

LWV Dallas also mourn the loss of Rebecca Bergstresser PhD, past President (1985-1987) of the Dallas League and long-time contributing member who recently passed. Rebecca also served as a Trustee for Dallas Independent School District and provided leadership to SMU’s Women’s Center and its Community Engagement Programs. The League of Women Voters (LWVD) honor these women for the significant impact made to their respective communities and to the LWVD.

Updates, Shout Outs, and Thank You's!

  • Elizabeth Walley for the hard work on the Voter Guides and Vote411. February 7 is the expected distribution date for the Guides.
  •  This year, in addition to the Voter Guides, LWVD will distribute Bookmarks that will contain voting information, QR codes, and links to the online platforms.
  •  We appreciate and thank Ian Seamans for sharing the Bookmark information option in that it has been successfully utilized by League of Women Voters of Collin County.
  •  We also give a big “shout out” to Diane Tasian who is organizing volunteers to help distribute Guides for this upcoming election season.
  •  The last day to register is February 5. Get registered, educate yourself by reading the Voters Guide or Vote411.org, and Vote. Your Vote is your Voice!

This year, we are honoring two phenomenal trailblazers who have shaped the landscape of civic engagement in Dallas.

First, the Making Democracy Work Awardee of the year is the Honorable Margaret S. C. Keliher! Her legacy shines through her groundbreaking role as the CEO of the Dallas Breakfast Group and as the first and only woman to be elected Dallas County Judge. And that is not all — she has been an unwavering champion fighting for clean air, healthcare access, and pioneering diversion programs that truly help individuals with mental illness, steering them towards healing rather than incarceration.

But wait, there is more to celebrate! We proudly present the Eleanor Sutherland Volunteer Award to the honorable Cristal Retana Lule! Her dedication knows no bounds — she is the force behind La Alianza, a coalition aimed at elevating the quality of life in Latino communities. Cristal's commitment shines through her leadership in multiple volunteer roles across many organizations that advocate for wider access to healthcare in Dallas.

Get ready to be inspired and join us for an unforgettable day of honoring greatness and fueling the future of democracy in our community!

Get Ready to Vote Flyer Now Available

The League of Women Voters of Dallas wants everyone in Texas to know that there is an election coming up starting on February 20th. We have created a flyer with all the information that a voter needs to find out who is on their ballot, what those candidates are about and how to find where and when to go vote. Click here to visit our homepage and view the flyer in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. We are hoping that you can help us reach more voters by sharing this PDF flyer with others in your group, your organization and friends and family. We at LWVD believe that increasing voter participation is good for democracy. Thank you for any sharing that you can do.

Attend the Voter Impact Collective Student Pitch Competition

This year, the League of Women Voters of Dallas has joined forces with the Voter Impact Collective (VIC) to empower young voices in increasing voter turnout for individuals 18 to 29 through the Student Pitch Competition.

Teams of high school and college students will be paired with mentors from local non-partisan civic organizations to develop their ideas on how to get out the vote among the 18-29 demographics. They will then present their case to a panel of judges who will award cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250 to the three best ideas. LWVD is sponsoring a team as part of our commitment to the project.

If you would like to attend the event and watch the presentations live, it will take place on Thursday, February 29, 2024 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Dallas Entrepreneur Center Network's Redbird Innovation Center at 3560 W. Camp Wisdom Road, Suite 200, Dallas Tx. Click here to register!

Looking For Board Members

Like many organizations we are seeking volunteers who want to work to make a difference. We are looking for individuals who want to be part of a working board of directors to set priorities and see projects to completion. Our board, like the rest of the League, is inclusive of all genders.

If you are interested in joining our board, please click here and fill out the questionnaire. Our Nominating Committee will receive the documents, and this will help us find willing and able candidates for our board. Not all board positions expire at the same time so the committee will retain information of individuals not elected in 2024 for future years. You may nominate yourself or someone else with their permission.
