January General Meeting and Membership Connections

Join us on January 20, from 10:30AM to 1:30PM for our January General Meeting and Membership Connections Meeting. The topic is the pending bond election. Our speaker is Jennifer Nicewander, the Director of the Office of Bond and Construction Management at the City of Dallas, who will provide an insider's view of the bond process. This will include a discussion of the city's current needs, existing master plans, recommended projects, construction timelines, election information, and more. Boxed lunches will be provided and a $10 donation would be appreciated.

Our Membership Connections Meeting will take place after the General Meeting presentation. This is a great meeting if you recently joined the League or if you would just like to meet more League and Board Members. There will be tables around the room with information on advocacy, volunteering, the upcoming Luncheon, unit meetings, and voter services, with a League member at each table to answer your questions.

The meeting will take place at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library on the 6th floor, in classroom E. There will be a Zoom option available for the General Meeting. Click here to register for the meeting.

January & February Candidate Forums

In coordination with the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce, LWV-D is co-sponsoring four primary candidate forums in January and February for the Texas House of Representatives and the U.S. House of Representatives. All forums, except for HD 32, will be held at the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce Offices and streamed via Zoom. Register below to receive the Zoom link.
The event details are below:
A candidate forum is a live public meeting in which two or more of the candidates for office present their views in short individual speeches, and then answer questions from the audience.

The League of Women Voters never supports or opposes any political party or political candidate. Forums sponsored by the LWV, or in which the LWV participates, are nonpartisan and ensure that all participating candidates are treated fairly and equally.

This year, we are honoring two phenomenal trailblazers who have shaped the landscape of civic engagement in Dallas.

First, the Making Democracy Work Awardee of the year is the Honorable Margaret S. C. Keliher! Her legacy shines through her groundbreaking role as the CEO of the Dallas Breakfast Group and as the first and only woman to be elected Dallas County Judge. And that is not all — she has been an unwavering champion fighting for clean air, healthcare access, and pioneering diversion programs that truly help individuals with mental illness, steering them towards healing rather than incarceration.

But wait, there is more to celebrate! We proudly present the Eleanor Sutherland Volunteer Award to Cristal Retana Lule! Her dedication knows no bounds — she is the force behind La Alianza, a coalition aimed at elevating the quality of life in Latino communities. Cristal's commitment shines through her leadership in multiple volunteer roles across many organizations that advocate for wider access to healthcare in Dallas.

Get ready to be inspired and join us for an unforgettable day of honoring greatness and fueling the future of democracy in our community!

Remembering Eddie Bernice Johnson

Eddie Bernice Johnson (EBJ) was one of the longest serving and most prominent elected women officials from the Dallas area. Her service exceeded 50 years with noteworthy accomplishments that brought change and transformation.

It is because of her trailblazing legacy that the League of Women Voters of Dallas (LWVD), salute her significant community impact. The League’s issues were also her issues – including healthcare for all, equal access to voting, enhanced learning and education, and fair and affordable housing for all. LWVD could always count on her advocacy and support for all necessary social change.

Our hearts break, knowing that this change-maker is no longer with us. But we rest assured that her tremendous impact lives on in the hearts and minds that she touched. Thank you, woman of courage!

Looking for Director Nominations

We are seeking volunteers who want to work to make a difference. We are looking for individuals who want to be part of a working board of directors to set priorities and see projects to completion. Our board, like the rest of the League, is inclusive of all genders.

If you are interested in joining our board, please click here and fill out the questionnaire. Our Nominating Committee will receive the documents, and this will help us find willing and able candidates for our board. Not all board positions expire at the same time so the committee will retain information of individuals not elected in 2024 for future years. You may nominate yourself or someone else with their permission.
