CO-PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

From the Desk of Sandy Thornton

To quote Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys, “Here we go.”  This is the beginning of an exciting and busy year for the League. We have three elections with the March Primary, the May local elections, and the November Presidential and important down-ballot races.

Here we go! We already have some candidate forums and voter registration events on our calendar. We have multiple volunteer opportunities under “Participate” on our website. Click here to see those opportunities.

Every election is important, but there is already so much hype about this one. It is our responsibility to be in the community advocating for Voter Rights, getting people registered, and informing voters through our Voters Guide, VOTE411.org, and candidate forums. Our mission of Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy seems especially important this year.

You can help; we need your help. We need all our members engaged this year. There is great satisfaction in registering a new voter, explaining the voting process to a young voter, and especially educating a new citizen. Helping a senior citizen apply for and fill out a mail-in ballot is worthy of our time.

We need new members so bring a friend to a meeting. We have an informative meeting on Saturday, January 20, on the Dallas Bond issues and election, followed by a Connections meeting where you can meet other members and learn about other events going on in the League. Click here to see the event calendar for more details and to register to attend in-person or via zoom.

Help us introduce the League to new people through your other organizations. We welcome all people to join us. We have a commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at all levels of the League.

This is an appeal to all members to become engaged this year in our efforts wherever your talent and time allow.

In League,

Sandy Thornton

Co-President – League of Women Voters of Dallas

Annual Luncheon Tickets Now Available

You're invited to the 27th Annual Luncheon hosted by the League of Women Voters of Dallas on Friday, February 9 at 11:00am at the Marriott Quorum Hotel.

You can order a ticket or become a sponsor by clicking here.

By ordering your ticket, becoming a sponsor, or bidding in the silent auction, you will play a pivotal role in empowering voters and safeguarding democracy through the upcoming year.

Your donations will fuel our mission, supporting everything from Voters Guides and candidate forums to voter registration events, advocacy, and important community-focused programs.

This year, we are honoring two phenomenal trailblazers who have shaped the landscape of civic engagement in Dallas.

First, the Making Democracy Work Awardee of the year is the Honorable Margaret S. C. Keliher! Her legacy shines through her groundbreaking role as the CEO of the Dallas Breakfast Group and as the first and only woman to be elected Dallas County Judge. And that is not all — she has been an unwavering champion fighting for clean air, healthcare access, and pioneering diversion programs that truly help individuals with mental illness, steering them towards healing rather than incarceration.

But wait, there is more to celebrate! We proudly present the Eleanor Sutherland Volunteer Award to Cristal Retana Lule! Her dedication knows no bounds — she is the force behind La Alianza, a coalition aimed at elevating the quality of life in Latino communities. Cristal's commitment shines through her leadership in multiple volunteer roles across many organizations that advocate for wider access to healthcare in Dallas.

Get ready to be inspired and join us for an unforgettable day of honoring greatness and fueling the future of democracy in our community!

January General Meeting and Membership Connections

Join us on January 20, from 10:30AM to 1:30PM for our January General Meeting and Membership Connections Meeting. The topic of the General Meeting is how bond propositions are developed. Our speaker is Jennifer Nicewander, the Director of the Office of Bond and Construction Management at the City of Dallas, who will provide an insider's view of the bond process.

This event will be in-person and will have a virtual option for the General Meeting. Boxed lunches will be provided and a $10 donation would be appreciated.

Registration will begin at 10:30, the program and Q&A will start at 11:00, and the lunch and Connections meeting will take place from 12:00 to 1:30. This is a great meeting if you recently joined the League or if you would just like to meet more League and Board Members. There will be tables around the room with information on advocacy, volunteering, the upcoming Luncheon, unit meetings, and voter services, with a League member at each table to answer your questions.

The meeting will take place at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library on the 6th floor, in classroom E. Click here to register for the meeting.

Voter Impact Collective Student Pitch Competition

This year, the League of Women Voters of Dallas has joined forces with the Voter Impact Collective (VIC) to empower young voices in increasing voter turnout for individuals 18 to 29 through the Student Pitch Competition.

Teams of high school and college students will be paired with mentors from local non-partisan civic organizations to develop their ideas on how to get out the vote among the 18-29 demographics. They will then present their case to a panel of judges who will award cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250 to the three best ideas.

LWVD is planning on sponsoring a team as part of our commitment to the project. If you know one or more students that would be interested in participating, you can fill out the short application on the VIC website, here. The deadline for submissions is Monday, January 15.

If you would like to attend the event and watch the presentations live, it will take place on Thursday, February 29, 2024 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Dallas Entrepreneur Center Network's Redbird Innovation Center at 3560 W. Camp Wisdom Road, Suite 200, Dallas Tx. More event information will be included in the February Voter.

Looking For Board Members

Like many organizations we are seeking volunteers who want to work to make a difference. We are looking for individuals who want to be part of a working board of directors to set priorities and see projects to completion. Our board, like the rest of the League, is inclusive of all genders.

If you are interested in joining our board, please click here and fill out the questionnaire. Our Nominating Committee will receive the documents, and this will help us find willing and able candidates for our board. Not all board positions expire at the same time so the committee will retain information of individuals not elected in 2024 for future years. You may nominate yourself or someone else with their permission.

Help Us Make This a Successful Silent Auction

The best “sellers” in a silent auction are usually the gift cards and items recruited from area businesses. And how do we gather these great items from businesses? We ask! We visit the business, or we send a letter or e-mail with a request.

I invite you to become a silent auction "warrior".  Print out the business letter and donor form at this link and plan a visit to one of your favorite local businesses. It is more fun if you invite a friend to join you.

It is best to find a time when the manager is not busy. Introduce yourself and the League and explain the ask. Then hand the manager the letter and the donation form. If inclined to donate, they may give a donation immediately or they may keep the forms for later.

You may be a bit surprised at how enjoyable this is. It is fun to visit area businesses and engage in conversation with the owner or manager. And not to worry, as a potential customer you will always be treated with courtesy.

To avoid duplicate visits to businesses, please email Becky Brakke or Cecilia McKay and mention which businesses you asked to contribute. Also, please ask us if you would like any further information about the silent auction.

Contact Becky Brakke (bbindal@aol.com), Cecilia McKay (cemck@currently.com), or Sandy Thornton (tubbsl@swbell.net).
