| LWV Unite & Rise: Submit Your Commitment Form
In May, the League of Women Voters launched our Unite & Rise 8.5 initiative to harness the power of voter engagement as a fundamental part of our democracy. Show your support by submitting the Unite & Rise commitment form by November 6th! | | Local Mental Health Services & the Dallas County Jail
Have you wondered what is, or is not, working in mental health services at the Dallas County jail? Why is there overcrowding in the Dallas County jail? Can early use of mental health services in the Dallas County community help prevent overcrowding?
Some LWV Dallas volunteers, the S.M.U. Human Rights Program, and Human Rights Dallas are building a coalition to analyze the mental health system. We need help conducting interviews, research, analyzing data, and writing the findings. Our next steps are to clarify the ways volunteers can help, establish guidelines for interviews, and add organizations to the coalition. Please share the name of any and all organizations you know of and your contact information by emailing Diane Tasian at volunteer@lwvdallas.org.
The analysis will focus on:
-
The community’s mental health services, those provided to pre- and post-trial detainees at the Dallas County Jail, with a view to finding links between the two.
-
The availability and accessibility of diverse community mental healthcare services, which might prevent the arrest of those suffering from a mental illness, or, if arrested, divert the mentally ill from serving jail time.
-
Identify recognized best practices to prevent incarceration.
-
Identify local procedures and practices that exacerbate mental health issues.
-
Identify types of accreditations and the impacts of having accreditation.
-
Address gender differences in the identification and diagnosis of the need for mental health services, the access to services, types and quality of services provided, and other issues in the jail and community, for families and youth.
The purpose of the analysis is to assemble the facts to advocate for access to improved mental health services and additional funding at the Dallas Commissioners Court as the next budget is prepared.
For additional information, Dr. McNabb recommends reading Alisa Roth: Insane: America’s Criminal Treatment of Mental Illness.
To volunteer to participate in the analysis, please contact Diane Tasian at volunteer@lwvdallas.org or leave a message at 214 688-4125 .
We look forward to hearing from you!
