From the President's Desk

From the Desk:

The local elections are over. As of this writing, we will have had another miserable turnout in exercising our right to vote. Our Right to Vote—yes, that right allows us to elect those we want to represent us, our values, and our wishes for our community. However, having the right to vote and exercising it are obviously different.

I’m not sure what that says about us. Do we not care enough about our community to bother? Don’t we have time to attend a candidate forum in person or virtually? Is it too hard to read the Voters Guide or VOTE411.org to learn about the candidates, or read the Dallas Morning News in print or online? Do so many of us believe our vote doesn’t count or our community voices won’t be heard?

Local elections are essential. They may be more significant to us than state or national elections. Do we not know that local elections are about streets, parks, and trash pickup? We sure gripe about them enough.

If you read this newsletter, you already care enough to educate yourself about the elections. We must now encourage others to exercise their Right to Vote. Take it upon yourself to find one or more people to take to the polls at the next election. Talk to them about issues or candidates or direct them to the Voters Guide or VOTE411.org. Please help us reach out to especially low-turnout precincts.

Talking to others about issues or candidates in this political climate is often tricky. Remember to speak truthfully and with civility. Potholes and clean parks should not be too controversial. Hopefully, then, we can move on to talking about water conservation, clean air, affordable housing, and traffic. Our local governments touch every one of these things.

To continue this discussion and hear about other LWV Dallas activities, attend our Annual Meeting on May 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Go here to register and learn more.

Don’t forget that LWV Texas is sending action alerts regarding pending legislation. Take a moment to read and react. Click the TAKE ACTION button and let your voice be heard in Austin. It only takes about a minute.

Annual Meeting, Saturday May 17th

The 87th League of Women Voters of Dallas Annual Meeting is coming up on Saturday, May 17th, and we want as many members as possible to attend! Join us as we gather as a community, celebrate a year of League achievements, offer Awards of recognition to our community members, and vote on important organizational plans that look ahead to 2025-2026. Please register for the Annual Meeting here!

The hybrid meeting will be held at the Texas Women's Foundation, Campbell Center II, 8150 N. Central Expressway, and members will also be able to attend via Zoom. The zoom link will be sent via email after registration.

For in-person attendees, a boxed lunch will be provided at no cost, but a $10 donation would be appreciated.

*A note on directions* If using Google Maps, be sure to type in the name "Texas Women's Foundation" rather than the physical address, or it may route you to the wrong location. This doesn't seem to be a problem on other map platforms. The Foundation is located on Central Expressway, I-75, just south of Northwest Highway. It is in the southern gold tower, Campbell II. See a map and photo below.

Voter Registration at Naturalization Ceremonies - Weekend Opportunity in May

Last month volunteers from LWV Collin County, Richardson and Dallas registered over 1500 new citizens at USCIS naturalization ceremonies in Irving. We need your help now, more than ever. We have lost many of our volunteers due to the location change from Plano and USCIS has scheduled multiple, smaller ceremonies each week.

If you’re a VDR for Dallas, Denton, Collin, or Tarrant counties, we need you! If you’re a VDR for multiple counties, that’s even better! If you’re a relatively new VDR, or if you just need a refresher event, let us know that—we can pair you with someone. Non-VDRs are always welcome, especially if you are a morning person, to help with setup and handing out voter registration forms.

For more information, contact project manager Cathy Murphree, LWV Richardson: newcitizen@lwvrichardson.org.

Don't Make 18 Million Texas Voters Show Their Papers! Say NO to SB 16!

SB 16, which would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, would disenfranchise citizens who do not or cannot present a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers to election officials before voting. Over 18 million current voters would not be exempt from this requirement, which would require election officials to implement an entirely new process for verifying citizenship. Contact your Senator and urge them to vote NO on SB 16!
