Subject: LWVD Friday Update 9/9
From: League of Women Voters of Dallas

Dear League Members and supporters,

For all of September and into October, Big D Reads is hosting a series of events focused on racial healing in Dallas.   Go to https://www.bigdreads.org/events to see the richness of offerings and the broad range of organizations and entities engaged in this effort.   It culminates in an evening with Jim Schutze at the Dallas Museum of Art, Arts & Letters Live Presents: Big D Reads Community Book Club: The Accommodation, on October 25.

September 10 - The Board meeting is this weekend at the office from 10 to Noon.

September 17 - Your Vote Your Power event at For Oak Cliff – more info and flyer below.

September 21, 7-8:30pm on Zoom.  Connections:

September 22 - Unit meeting planning – See below for Invitation from Eileen Rosenblum, Director, and coordinator of Unit meetings.

Now through September 22 – North Texas Giving Day is now allowing folks to schedule their donations.  Please think of us when you visit their website.

Call for volunteers – Seeking drivers and navigators for the Apartment Voter Engagement Project.    LWVD is collaborating with March to the Polls and VoterZine to get English and Spanish mail-in voter registration forms to apartments all over town.  Folders plastered with voter information in English and Spanish with QR codes hold the forms.   If you would like to help please contact Valerie Walraven at voterzine@gmail.com.

Sept 17 from 4 to 7:  Your Vote Your Power event at For Oak Cliff.  Food trucks and family friendly.

The League of Women Voters of Dallas, Dallas NAACP Branch, and LULAC District 3 are hosting a nonpartisan voter registration drive to empower voters before the election.

During the event, English and Bilingual Spanish-speaking volunteers will register voters and provide voter education services such as explaining when and where to vote or how voters can update their registration if they moved recently. Food will be on-site and available for purchase. Special guest speakers will share personal stories about the importance of voting.

Thank you Susybelle Gosslee and Ashley Washington for bringing LWVD into a collaboration with NAACP Dallas Branch and LULAC to register and engage voters.  Thank you to the volunteers who have signed up.   Big news:  Jim Schutze, author of The Accommodation.  The Politics of Race in an American City will be one of the speakers.  The pool will also be open with 2 lifeguards on duty.

Dear LWV Dallas League Members and Friends,

I am excited to inform you that in-person LWV Dallas Unit Meetings are coming back!  We have scheduled a planning meeting to determine membership interest in establishing in person Unit Meetings for Thursday, September 22, 2022, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM. The planning meeting will be in the conference room on the second floor of the League office at 6060 North Central Expressway, Dallas TX. 75206.  We plan to order box lunches from Central Market or a local caterer. In addition to discussing upcoming plans for the Units, we will also have a presentation by the Dallas Police Department on how they try to address mental issues.

The LWVD Board and I are thinking of beginning with two Units that meet once a month, one on Tuesday and one on Thursday. Both Units will be held from 11:30 to 1:00 PM. One Unit will probably be in one of the meeting rooms at 6060 North Central Expressway and the other will be at a location in far north Dallas.  Join us on September 22 to help us plan the Unit details.

Please let me know that you can attend and that you wish to order a lunch. You can email me at: Eileen.rosenblum@gmail.com. If you would like to order a box lunch, please let me know by September 20, 2022. The cost will be approximately $15.00 for lunch.  Below are current issues we plan to discuss at Units meetings in 2022-2023.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Best regards,

Eileen Rosenblum, 2022-2023 Units Coordinator
